April 23, 2025 Accelerating Toward 100% Renewable: Cordia’s Path to a Sustainable Energy Future

Written By Chris Freeman, Environmental Manager

In response to both climate change and growing interest from public and private sectors, electric utilities and independent power producers have significantly expanded renewable electricity generation in recent years. Today, wind and hydroelectric power lead the way, followed by solar and geothermal sources.

Renewable electricity offers a wide array of benefits when compared to conventional fossil fuel or nuclear generation. It does not produce air pollution, greenhouse gases, or radioactive waste. As of 2024, approximately 21% of electricity generated in the United States comes from renewable sources.

Cordia has committed to using 100% renewable electricity by 2035. As part of that journey, the company is targeting nine plants running on 100% renewable power by 2025.

The availability and cost of renewable electricity vary widely by region. Wind energy is abundant and affordable in the Midwest and Central U.S., while hydroelectricity is produced by dams in the West, Great Lakes, and Southeast. Solar power generation thrives in the sun-rich Southwest, including California, Texas, Arizona, and Nevada.

Reflecting these regional strengths, Cordia’s operations are transitioning strategically:

  • Midwest: Energy Center Omaha now runs entirely on Nebraska wind power across its three plants. Energy Center Minneapolis uses Midwestern wind for approximately 50% of its energy needs.
  • West: In California, Energy Centers San Francisco and San Diego currently source about 50% of their power from renewables and are actively working toward full renewable adoption by 2025.
  • Southwest: In Arizona, Energy Center Phoenix is exploring a 20% renewable mix to produce green chilled water for interested customers.
  • East: Energy Center Harrisburg uses 100% renewable electricity in two of its three plants.

Cordia’s regionally tailored approach and steadfast commitment reflect a broader industry shift toward sustainable, low-emission power. By leveraging local renewable resources, Cordia is not only meeting environmental goals but also setting a clear example for responsible energy leadership.
